So you need more protection for your Mac than a simple screen lock, eh? Maybe you have confidential data for your eyes only like financial information, important PDF forms or any number of other things you don’t want people to be able to gain access to. OS X has a few options to choose from in the way of security, namely FileVault and encrypted disk images.
Lion’s FileVault 2
FileVault protects the data on your harddrive with a 128-bit XTS-AES encryption, but only your internal drive – you won’t be able to secure any external devices with this method (unless you wipe and format the other drive as a FileVault partition). Once unlocked though FileVault is completely unlocked, meaning if you leave your computer and someone else walks up while your gone, your files are up for grabs. Not to infer that there’s some shadowy conspiracy out there with their heart set on stealing your personal data…
